Heath Beck is a second year graduate student in Georgia State University’s Master of Arts in Film Studies program. His interest in film derives from his family’s habit of bonding over movies, specifically his mother’s love of horror films. Original aspirations of teaching high school English were quickly usurped when film academia came knocking. As an academic, his research interests involve censorship practices and international horror/cult cinema. He will soon begin conducting research for his thesis project.
Heath has been writing and developing screenplays for over eight years. Though his screenplays and short fiction are rooted in the horror and suspense genres, his work attempts to understand suburban life in the South while upending genre expectations. Heath recently co-wrote the sci-fi short Patient 108 for the 48 Hour Film Project where it won Best Cinematography and Best Screenplay at the Best of Atlanta screening. He also writes for Jackass Penguin, a comedy troupe that develops web-based content, short films, and soon feature films. Apart from the cinema, Heath plays bass in the Atlanta-area comedy/punk band Squirt Gun Militia.
