We are running a contest for this anthology, just like for our Poetry Anthology. The best three stories will win 1st-3rd place and all winners will be published in the Anthology and receive a free copy of the Anthology. The winners may also have their name and entries displayed on our website. Prizes are 1st: 30 dollars, publication, and free copy, 2nd: 20 dollars, publication, and free copy, 3rd: 10 dollars, publication, and free copy. This anthology is designed to collect the best fiction on war. We don’t want war as a backdrop to another story, but the war or conflict must be the major part of the story.

Murder has occurred in the affluent neighborhood of a small town. Your lead character, who works in some capacity of criminal investigation, is the first one to arrive. But this crime scene is unlike anything your lead character has seen before. This crime scene would frighten even the most seasoned big-city investigator. What’s the story? DeadlineOctober 31, 2008. BEST FRIENDS BOOK SERIES
Friends Animal Society to create several new books featuring stories about some amazing rescued cats, dogs, and horses. Each book will contain a number of heartwarming chapters contributed by celebrities, well-known writers, and regular folks just like you. We want inspirational, true, well-written stories focusing on a single four-legged friend you rescued that had an indelible impact on your life. Perhaps the animal got you through some challenging times, accomplished some incredible feats, or even literally saved your life. Deadline September 1, 2008. If your story is selected for inclusion, you will receive a small payment upon publication. The offered amount will vary, based on the length of the story and other considerations. Alternatively, you can donate this fee to Best Friends or another animal shelter of your choosing.

We will resume reading submissions in October due to the overflow of submissions. Original, unpublished works of western fiction set in the American Old West before 1914. Short stories and novels in the classic style for a general readership. No language. No sex. Payment: $50 for a short story. $250 for a short novel. $500 for a long novel. Short stories from 3,000 to 10,000 words. Short novels over 40,000 words. Long novels over 90,000 words.
Outside is a monthly national magazine dedicated to covering the people, sports and activities, politics, art, literature, and hardware of the outdoors. Queries should present a clear, original, and provocative thesis, not merely a topic or idea, and should reflect familiarity with the magazine’s content and tone. Features are generally 1,500 to 5,000 words in length. Dispatches articles (100 to 800 words) cover timely news, events, issues, and short profiles. Destinations pieces (300 to 1,000 words) include places, news, and advice for adventurous travelers. Review articles (200 to 1,500 words) examine and evaluate outdoor gear and equipment.
“Raw: Brutality as Art,” Snuff Books’ first anthology. We’re looking for original horror and bizarro short fiction, between 4,000 and 6,000 words that works within the theme of brutality as an art form.
