WRITERS AND ARTISTS SHORT STORY COMPETITION

Deadline February 14, 2009. For published and aspiring
writers alike. You could win a cash prize of £500, a place
on an Arvon Foundation residential writing course worth £575,
publication of your story on the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook
website. No more than 2,000 words, on the theme of ‘Conflict.’
Winners agree to participate in publicity events in connection
with the competition.

THE KIRIYAMA PRIZE

NO ENTRY FEE
The Prize consists of a cash award of US $30,000, which is
split equally between the fiction and nonfiction winners.
Beginning in 2008, if a work in translation is chosen as a
winner in either category, the translator will receive $5,000
and the winning author $10,000. In February each year, two
panels of judges select five finalists in each category,
fiction and nonfiction. The winners are chosen from among
these finalists in late March. Along with the winners and
finalists, the Prize also publishes an annual list of notable
books in the fiction and nonfiction categories, which are also
drawn from the judging process. Thus, each year, the Prize
recognizes, celebrates, and promotes a wide variety of
outstanding books. Authors who reside in any country in the
world are eligible.

Your story must incorporate the theme of ELECTION HORROR.
Word count maximum is 1,000. Your story must have first
rights available. Submit to halloween@apexdigest.com.
Deadline October 15, 2008. Winner receives payment of 10
cents/word and publication in Apex Digest Online. Second
place receives payment of 5 cents per word and publication
in Apex Digest Online. Third place receives a free Apex
Book Company hardcover. Fourth place receives a free Apex
Book Company trade paperback. Winning and second place story
will be published on November 4th (election day).

ROMANCE SLAM JAM CONTEST

Black Romance/Women’s Fiction. Prizes:

1st Place: This winner’s manuscript will be reviewed by
Editor Esi Sogah from AVON/HarperCollins for possible
publication.

2nd Place: This winner’s manuscript will be reviewed by
Editor Hilary Sares from Kensington Books for possible
publication.

3rd Place: This winner’s manuscript will be reviewed by
Editor Theresa Stevens from Red Sage publishing for
possible publication.

To help prepare contestants for submitting to publishing
houses and agents, the entries will resemble a submission
package sent to agents and publishers. Submissions are
electronic (sent via email). The file should be a Microsoft
Word document. Deadline January 2, 2009. Three-page
synopsis double-spaced. Twenty sample pages double-spaced.
