Building strong, credible characters who engage our empathy requires a dynamic understanding of their inner life, not a laundry list of traits. This demands an understanding of the primacy of scene-character is revealed more in what is said and done than described. By sketching scenes that dramatize the core conflicts of the character’s lives, students learn to give flesh and blood to their fiction.
